Huế is a city in central Vietnam that was the seat of Nguyen Dynasty emperors and the imperial capital from 1802 to 1945.

We visited the 19th-century Đại Nội Citadel which is surrounded by a moat and thick stone walls. It encompasses the Imperial City, with palaces and shrines in the Forbidden Purple City that was once the emperor’s home.

Tomb of Tự Đức aka Lăng Tự Đức is located in Huế, Vietnam.

INTERESTING FACTS:

✔️Emperor Tu Duc enjoyed the longest reign of any monarch of the Nguyen dynasty, ruling from 1848-83.

✔️It took three years to build from 1864–1867.
✔️Although he had over a hundred wives and concubines, he was unable to father a son (possibly he became sterile after contracting smallpox).
✔️From 1866-1883, Emperor Tự Đức lived in the tomb's palace until his death.
✔️Despite the grandeur of the site and the amount of time Tu Duc spent here, he was buried in a different, secret location somewhere in Hue. To keep the secret safe the 200 laborers who buried the king were all beheaded after they returned from the secret route. To this day, the real tomb of Tu Duc remains hidden.

✔️The tomb was completed by Bảo Đại, Khải Định's successor, in 1931.
✔️The tomb is a blend of Western and Eastern architecture.
✔️ Before his 1925 death, the Emperor visited France where he was likely influenced by the architectural styles there, evidenced by the European influences in his Oriental mausoleum.
